Special Awards
The David Charette Memorial Sportsmanship Award A dictionary definition of "sportsmanship" maintains it is the character, practice, or skill of a sportsman. A thesaurus compares sportsmanship to fairness, honor, gamesmanship, and one having principles of a cheerful loser or a worthy blue ribbon winner. This sportsmanship award would recognize the person who is the embodiment of true sportsmanship.
These principles do not apply only to riders. Grooms, trainers, parents, family members, siblings and friends all play vital roles in the life of a competitor. Please email Mary Charette at JUMPMUD@aol.com with the name of a person that you would like to nominate, along with a paragraph stating why you think that person is a true sportsman.
This award will be presented at the 2009 RI Equitation Championships. The winner will be presented with a $200 gift certificate to Weathervane Tack Shop and their name engraved on a Perpetual Trophy.
The RIHA Scholarship Award
Each year, the RIHA awards a $1,000 scholarship to a RI member attending college or graduate school.
Each applicant is required to write a 2 to 3-page essay
answering a question (which will be announced on this website). All essays will be assessed according to: content, organization and mechanics (i.e.,
punctuation, spelling and sentence structure). The award is judged on the essay alone, financial need is not evaluated. All effort is made to keep
the author of each essay anonymous to the scholarship committee members before the essays are
evaluated. This scholarship is awarded at the RI Equitation Championships.
